Created in 2006 with the goal of empowering, educating, and strengthening the community she was born and raised in, the Tamara James Foundation is a non-profit organization serving the underprivileged, encouraging the youth to excel in sports through scholarships and exposure opportunities, preparing athletes for life after sports, coordinating year-round events including holiday food drives, health fairs, and back-to-school drives, while organizing several other community-based initiatives for the betterment of the community. Ms. James partakes in public speaking engagements, encouraging various women groups, college students, charities, churches, and professional entities, in addition to speaking for Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders (MLT) which engages high school students on the importance of having an after-graduation plan. Through Tamara’s philanthropic and charitable initiatives, she has provided health resources, food and clothing, youth sports clinics, and several other opportunities in hopes to promote unity and empowerment within the people of surrounding areas.
Tamara is a former professional basketball player of the WNBA’s Washington Mystics. She is also a Hall-of-Fame athlete at the University of Miami, where she remains the all-time leading scorer for men and women. James was selected by the Mystics as the eighth overall pick in the 2006 WNBA draft. Her professional basketball career expanded internationally where she played in countries such as Spain, Turkey, and Israel. Tamara James retired from the game she loved in 2015, and she remains the CEO of the Tamara James Foundation in addition to occupying the important role of Mayor of Dania Beach, Florida.
The Tamara James Foundation maximizes donor generosity through supporting causes most needed in her beloved community. Each special donor has causes that are near and dear to their heart. Thanksgiving Food Drive
The Tamara James Foundation delights in humbly serving the community, year round, including the holiday seasons. Our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive aims to allow donors the opportunity to provide fulfilling, nutritious meals, and a memorable holiday to our neighbors in need. After all, Thanksgiving is a time of gratitude and reflection. The Tamara James Foundation happily provides our brothers and sisters with Thanksgiving bags full of fresh produce, turkey, and other Thanksgiving-related items. Our goal to feed a significant number of people expands each year, thanks to the generosity of community donors. Please find it in your heart to make someone else’s holiday possible.

In 2018, the Tamara James Foundation will be celebrating over a decade of community service! Each year, over 2,000 children in our community receive backpacks filled with school supplies. Additionally, Tamara James Day offers several beneficial, fun, and valuable services – a health fair (blood donation, free youth immunizations, rapid HIV testing, vision screening), basketball clinics and games, entertainment (bounce houses, rock walls, music, facepainting), and food, brought to the people of the community at no cost. This free event also invites eight area schools, along with their respective principals and staff, to meet and greet parents in an effort to ensure their children are prepared for the first day of school. The Tamara James Foundation understands that it takes a village. So, on Tamara James Day, we gather our village together for a day of free fun and education!
